Applicant Eligibility

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY  |  Biology Ambassadors Program at UNC-Chapel Hill

Who is eligible?

Candidates for the Biology Ambassadors Program must be full-time undergraduate UNC-Chapel Hill students who are pursuing a major in biology (B.S., B.A., or Quantitative). At the time of appointment, candidates must be a sophomore or above, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50.

Additionally, all major officers of the Biology Ambassadors Program Executive Board must be full-time, registered students of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

This organization abides by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Non-Discrimination Policy for Student Organizations, which states the following: Membership and participation in the organization must be open to all students without regard to age, race, color, national origin, disability, religious status or historic religious affiliation, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Membership and participation in the organization must also be open without regard to gender, unless exempt under Title IX. Student organizations that select their members on the basis of commitment to a set of beliefs (e.g., religious or political beliefs) may limit membership and participation in the organization to students who, upon individual inquiry, affirm that they support the organization’s goals and agree with its beliefs, so long as no student is excluded from membership or participation on the basis of his or her age, race, color, national origin, disability, religious status or historic religious affiliation, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or, unless exempt under Title IX, gender.

Who is selected?

Applications for new Ambassadors will be released via email to the Biology email listserv (headed by Biology Advisor Gidi Shemer) in late February/early March to recruit Ambassadors for the following fall semester. Applicants will first complete an online application, and applicants that move onto the second stage will receive a casual in-person interview with two Executive Board members in March. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate leadership, communication, teamwork, and writing skills, and who will accurately and responsibly represent UNC-Chapel Hill and its academic programs. Enthusiasm and pride in the Department of Biology is valued, as Ambassadors give back to the Department of Biology, UNC-Chapel Hill, and community through volunteering and events.

Executive Board members have a term limit of two years and must also be full-time biology students at UNC-Chapel Hill with cumulative GPAs of 2.50 or greater. There is no time limit for how long an Ambassador may serve, as long as that Ambassador remains a full-time biology student at UNC-Chapel Hill with a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or greater.
